E-Newsletter for the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time

2ND COLLECTION 16/17 OCT: WORLD MISSION

We keep Foreign Missions Sunday this weekend. This is one of the most important Collections of the year & engages every Catholic Parish from the poorest to the richest throughout the world. Through the Collection, support is given to those territories who struggle to provide religious & material support to fellow Catholics because of their lack of financial & other resources. Many of these have been hit hard by Covid &, unlike the UK, do not have the vaccination programme which is, at the moment, keeping many of us alive. But they also need our prayers & Bishop Philip requests that the following be put in Parish Newsletters: “Bp Philip is celebrating Mission Mass on Tues 19 October at 12:15pm at St John’s Cathedral, Portsmouth. This will be followed by refreshments in the Cathedral Discovery Centre.

Last Chance to Donate! Fr Paul and Ian Liddell Royal Parks Half Marathon - 10th October
Congratulations to Fr Paul and Ian Liddell who completed the half marathon on October 10th, 2021 for The Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD) to help raise money to help those living in poverty around the world. It’s not too late to donate!

Message from Fr.Paul.

We were blessed with unseasonably mild weather as we lined up for the start of the Royal Parks London half marathon last Sunday. The stunning 13.1 mile route takes in the capital’s world-famous landmarks on closed roads, and four of London’s eight Royal Parks – Hyde Park, The Green Park, St James’s Park and Kensington Gardens. I think there were approximately 15000 runners most of whom were running for a wide array of different charities. Five of us (including Ian and myself) were running for Cafod who aim to support people from some of the world’s poorest nations and communities. While the run was pretty taxing, we were all buoyed up by the great support from the crowds that lined the streets and parks. It was during those tough moments during the run that we needed the vocal support most plus knowing that all the hard work would really benefit the lives of those whom Cafod support. Thank you to those who sponsored us; it is not too late if you have not already done so!

October the month of the Holy Rosary

The month of October is a month customarily dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. The Rosary, with its sequence of prayers and mysteries, is a Christ-centred Gospel prayer, which we say in union with the Blessed Mother. As we also commence the Extraordinary Mission Month, please offer the Rosary each day for the Church’s mission both at home and abroad.

There's a handy, downloadable guide of all the Rosary Prayers and Mysteries on our website.

Say "No" to Assisted Suicide

We need to redouble our prayers, advocacy and action to thwart Baroness Meacher's 'Assisted Dying Bill 2021' which comes before the House of Lords for its second reading and debate on 15th October. To this end, I encourage you to join in a national novena of prayer, seeking the intercession of St John Paul II, on whose feast the second reading falls. The Novena will run from 13th-22nd October.

The Novena Prayer is as follows:

Merciful God, we pray with thanks and gratitude for the great spiritual gift of Saint John Paul II’s apostolic life and mission. Through his heavenly intercession we ask that the ‘Assisted Dying’ Bill be defeated and that the infinite worth of each human person is upheld through proper investment in palliative care. Grant also that we may grow in love for You and proclaim the love of Jesus Christ to all people. Through Christ, Our Lord Amen Our Father … Hail Mary … Glory be ...
